Behind Romney’s change of heart on abortion

Behind Romney’s change of heart on abortion - The Washington Post: Romney’s own change of heart evolved not from personal experience but rather from a purposeful course of study. . . . The politically expedient choice was obvious, but Romney took a more thoughtful approach and sought to educate himself before staking out a position. Enter William Hurlbut, a physician and professor of biomedical ethics at Stanford University Medical School. For several hours, Hurlbut and Romney met in the governor’s office and went through the dynamics of conception, embryonic development and the repercussions of research that targets nascent human life. It was not a light lunch.

  1. It could be mentioned that Romney counselled a woman not to have an abortion at the time he was a Mormon church official. It could be mentioned that the speech on religion and politics by Romney was better than that of JFK. As a prominent Catholic priest labor columnist pointed out, the speech of JFK went too far in separating religious convictions from public and political discussion. Moreover, as theologian Richard Neuhaus pointed out in Naked Public Square, the Catholic position on abortion is primarily based on the Natural Law, which is the basis of the Declaration of Independence and the U.S. Constitution. There is no reason that the Mormons can't join in the public, political discussion of laws and morality of abortion, whether they cite their own religious beliefs or the Natural Law. Note that the reasons given by Romney and Perry for changing their political position on abortion had nothing to do with their religious beliefs, but were based on their natural revulsion against experiments with embryos (Romney) and seeing face to face a woman who lived because her mother decided not to abort her, despite her having come into existence because of a rape.
